 Anonymity

I write anonymously so that I can write honestly. People who use their real identity will be concerned with their social status and inevitably conform to societal expectations in order to preserve or enhance that status. They will be 'politically correct' and 'follow the herd'.

Some trolls might say that this is 'cowardice'. But only cowards who would anonymously dox me, rather than engage me in intellectual debate, would say this. The real cowards are those who conform. I put on a mask so that I can speak honestly. Real cowards take off the mask and speak dishonestly. They try to deny the livelihood of those they disagree with, rather than have the courage to engage with their ideas. Conforming to the herd morality of the day is the opposite of courage, but it does give you the protection of using your real identity. If someone attacks me for being anonymous I know they are a coward with nothing original, their own, or interesting to say. Being conformist hides yourself amongst the herd, which makes you effectively anonymous to the outside observer.
